George Orwell nightmare „1984“ was written as a novel, as science fiction: now it is reality…….
Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950)
Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950) who used the pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction, and polemical journalism. He is best known for the dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (published in 1949) and the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945). His book Homage to Catalonia (1938), an account of his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, is widely acclaimed, as are his numerous essays on politics, literature, language, and culture. In 2008, The Times ranked him second on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and commitment to democratic socialism.
1984: Big Brother is watching you!
The adjective Orwellian connotes an attitude and a policy of control by propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, denial of truth, and manipulation of the past. In “Nineteen Eighty-Four” Orwell described a totalitarian government that controlled thought by controlling language, making certain ideas literally unthinkable. Several words and phrases from Nineteen Eighty-Four have entered popular language. Newspeak is a simplified and obfuscatory language designed to make independent thought impossible. Doublethink means holding two contradictory beliefs simultaneously. The Thought Police are those who suppress all dissenting opinion. Prolefeed is homogenized, manufactured superficial literature, film and music, used to control and indoctrinate the populace through docility. Big Brother is a supreme dictator who watches everyon.
Does this not ring a bell with you?
The current developments have also been predicted by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) during and right after the First Word War (1914-1918) and this is one reason, he came up with the concept and realization of “Three-Fold Social Order” (“Three-Fold Commonwealth”).
